{"id":400,"date":"2025-07-17T15:53:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T15:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dexalumpotrik.com\/?p=400"},"modified":"2025-07-21T13:30:55","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T13:30:55","slug":"what-to-know-about-kristi-noems-plans-to-ease-tsa-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dexalumpotrik.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/17\/what-to-know-about-kristi-noems-plans-to-ease-tsa-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"What to know about Kristi Noem\u2019s plans to ease TSA rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been exploring ways to lighten the Transportation Security Administration\u2019s (TSA) rules governing airport travel, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem\u00a0told\u00a0NewsNation host Blake Burman at the Hill Nation Summit on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Noem\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5403893-tsa-liquid-size-announcement-due\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teased\u00a0a potential easing<\/a> of regulations on the size of liquid containers allowed through airport security in carry-ons and said the \u201cfuture of an airport,\u201d in her view, would allow travelers to essentially walk straight through security.<\/p>\n<p>Noem\u2019s remarks came shortly after the TSA announced it would allow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/transportation\/5389484-tsa-shoes-security-screening-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">travelers\u00a0to keep their shoes on<\/a> during security screening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She claimed that since Day 1, she started \u201cquestioning everything TSA does.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear when new changes, if any, would be\u00a0announced or <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/transportation\/5390000-tsa-permits-shoes-airports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what their implementation<\/a> would look like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not certainly anything we\u2019ll be announcing in the next week or two, but we\u2019re working to see what we can do to make the traveling experience much better and more hospitable for individuals, but also still keep safety standards,\u201d Noem told The Hill after her appearance at the summit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5404901-hill-nation-summit-memorable-moments\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t7 memorable moments from Hill Nation Summit\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s what to know about the changes to airport security the DHS might be weighing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Considering allowing more liquid<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Liquids in carry-on items are\u00a0restricted to small containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, generally packed together in a 1 quart plastic bag. Travelers may pack more liquids in their checked luggage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will tell you \u2014 I mean the liquids \u2014 I\u2019m questioning. So that may be the next big announcement is what size your liquids need to be,\u201d Noem said at the Hill Nation Summit.<\/p>\n<p>The TSA\u2019s liquid regulations were instituted in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna37021555\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">response\u00a0to a 2006 plot<\/a> thwarted by British authorities to allegedly blow up a U.S.-bound plane with liquid explosives. The agency initially banned liquids and gels in carry-on bags altogether before revisiting to adopt the current size restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>The liquid regulations also apply to aerosols, gels, creams and pastes ranging from shampoo to hair spray to peanut butter.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>No more shoes off at the airport<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A big change <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/transportation\/5389484-tsa-shoes-security-screening-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was announced\u00a0July 8<\/a>\u00a0when the TSA said it would allow travelers to keep their shoes on during security screening.<\/p>\n<p>This could decrease the wait times in security lines and avoid the well-known pileup after the TSA checkpoint, where everyone is scrambling to tie their laces. However, travelers will still be asked <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/transportation\/5390000-tsa-permits-shoes-airports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to\u00a0remove\u00a0other items<\/a> such as electronics or belts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;nearly&nbsp;20-year-old law&nbsp;was introduced because Richard Reid tried to detonate a bomb hidden in his shoe in Miami in December 2001,&nbsp;just&nbsp;after 9\/11.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A TSA pilot program, however, demonstrated that new screening technology could detect&nbsp;threats even if individuals kept their shoes on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to our cutting-edge technological advancements and multi-layered security approach, we are confident we can implement this change while maintaining the highest security standards. This initiative is just one of many the Trump administration is pursuing to usher in the President\u2019s vision for a new Golden Age of American travel,\u201d the DHS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/news\/press\/releases\/2025\/07\/08\/dhs-end-shoes-travel-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote\u00a0in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is next for TSA rules?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Noem also touted the possibility of new technology that would simplify the overall process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The DHS chief said she is \u201cworking with several different companies with technologies to give us competitive bids on what they actually do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new services would be piloted in select U.S. airports&nbsp;and, if successful, deployed&nbsp;nationwide, she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is still a process that is protecting people who are traveling on our airlines. But it has to make sense. It has to actually do something to make you safer,\u201d Noem told Burman.<\/p>\n<p>She continued by criticizing the Biden administration for not seeing the changes as a priority.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept wondering if we were doing things just to slow people down, or what it was, but TSA is working on the technology that we have available to us if we deploy it correctly,\u201d Noem said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And she sketched an ambitious view of what airport security could look like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe future of an airport, where I\u2019m looking to go, is you walk in the door with your carry-on suitcase, you walk through a scanner and right to your flight.
